Feeling overwhelmed and stressed at work? You’re not alone. About 65% of workers in the U.S. have suggested that work is a significant source of stress in their lives.

So, while workplace stress might be considered “normal,” it’s not something you should have to live with for long. It can cause negative, harmful symptoms like aches and pains, digestive issues, insomnia, fatigue, and even depression.

Thankfully, there are things you can do to manage workplace stress, no matter your position.

Let’s look at some healthy, effective strategies that will help you handle work-related stress like a pro.

Find the Source of Your Stress

One of the best ways to start combatting stress at work is to learn your triggers. Is it a toxic work environment? Are you taking on too much? Maybe there are one or two co-workers triggering your feelings.

When you figure out what stresses you and how you respond, you’ll be able to take actionable steps to avoid or reduce those stressors. You might even be able to talk to your employer about ways to make your job less overwhelming.

Take Frequent Breaks

It’s easy to assume that taking more breaks will lead to a lack of productivity. But, how much are you getting done each day when you’re consumed with stress?

Taking breaks can actually boost your productivity at work while giving your mental health a break. Short breaks throughout the day can clear your mind and help you calm down so you can stay focused.

As you take breaks, try things like mindfulness or meditation. Stretch, or go for a five-minute walk around the workplace. Being proactive with your breaks is a great way to combat stress.

Set Boundaries

It’s just as acceptable to set boundaries at work as it is in your personal life. Obviously, you have a job to do. But, it’s okay to set limits on your time and energy. You don’t always have to work late just because someone asks you to. You don’t have to take on every extra task you’re given if it’s not something you’re supposed to do.

Additionally, you don’t have to entertain everyone who steps into your workspace if they’re keeping you from getting things done.

Setting healthy boundaries for yourself at work will help to prevent extra stress and burnout. Not only will you get more done, but you’ll feel less overwhelmed each day.

Create a Healthy Work-Life Balance

No matter your career or how many hours you work each week, it’s essential to strike a work-life balance that allows you to enjoy things outside your job each day.

Don’t hesitate to make time for yourself to do the things you enjoy and to practice self-care. If you’re stressed, self-care practices like exercising, or simply prioritizing sleep, can go a long way in helping you feel better.

Spending time with people you love and taking part in hobbies you enjoy can also make a difference. These actions might seem simple, but it’s easy to ignore them when you’re under a lot of stress.

Talk to Someone

If you’ve tried some of these strategies and you’re still having a hard time dealing with workplace stress, consider talking to a mental health professional.

Therapy can help you find the root cause of your stress if you’re struggling to discover it on your own. It can also help you learn even more effective strategies that will not only make it easier to get through the workday, but to let go of your stress as much as possible.
