The new year is fast approaching, and you might already be thinking about resolutions or “new year, new you” ideas to kick things off.
If that’s the case, or you’re just starting to think about changes you want to make in the coming year, consider whether social pressures might be holding you back or keeping you down.
We all want to fit in and be liked. Unfortunately, sometimes, those desires keep us from staying true to ourselves. If you feel like you’ve lost a sense of who you are, now is the time to focus on making changes.
So, how can you cope with social pressure in the new year?
Set Healthy Boundaries
One of the easiest ways to combat social pressure from the start is to set boundaries. If social situations make you feel overwhelmed, set limits for yourself. You don’t have to accept every invitation. You don’t have to let people pressure you into doing things you don’t want to do.
Think about the things that add value to your life and the people who build you up. If you’re being asked to be involved in social situations that somehow make you feel “less,” communicate your boundaries clearly. It’s not disrespectful or rude, it’s self-preserving. You might be surprised to find how much weight is lifted from your shoulders when you have boundaries in place.
Set Realistic Expectations
Social pressure can also come from the desire to fit in or to be like everyone else. It’s okay to want to improve yourself in some ways. But, be realistic when it comes to your goals and expectations.
Make this the year you stop comparing yourself to others. Instead, focus on how you can nourish your existing values. Set resolutions that align with those values, rather than worrying about what others might want to achieve.
Consider limiting your social media exposure in the new year. It can help you avoid comparison issues and make it easier to focus on the positive aspects of your life.
Surround Yourself with the Right People
If you’ve been spending time with people who make you doubt your values, or people who don’t align with your values, it might be time to change your inner circle.
When you focus on who you are, who you want to be, and the things that are important to you, you shouldn’t have to bend for anyone. Doing so will cause you to lose sight of those values and make you feel bad about yourself.
Next year, focus on surrounding yourself with people who support your values. They don’t necessarily have to have the exact same ones, but they should be able to understand where you’re coming from and lift you up along the way.
Practice Self-Care
Self-care is important for a variety of reasons. It can boost your physical and mental well-being while helping you become more mindful and grounded in the present.
Small, simple self-care practices can easily become a part of your daily routine. Try to prioritize getting enough sleep, exercising every day, and trying things like meditation or mindfulness. Consider keeping a gratitude journal to focus on the good things in your life, or use it to set goals for the future.
