It’s no secret that life is often full of twists and turns. Some changes are predictable, but even those can be challenging to navigate at times. That’s especially true when you’re trying to go through them with a partner.
Midlife changes can include anything from career shifts to different family dynamics. For example, you might be considering a new job in a different state. Or, your kids might be grown and out of the house, causing you to look at your own identity and wonder, “what now?”
Staying close to your partner during these changes can be more difficult than it seems, as you both try to navigate the shifts in your lives. However, choosing to be proactive and putting effort into your relationship will help to ensure you’re closer than ever. You can navigate these changes together and have someone to lean on if things start to feel overwhelming.
So, how can you stay close during these midlife transitions?
Consistent Communication
Healthy communication habits are always important in a relationship. However, when you’re going through changes together, especially after being in that relationship for a long time, these habits become more important than ever.

Don’t hesitate to open up to your partner. Talk about your feelings, including any challenges or concerns you have. Transitions can be exciting, and it’s okay to express that, but it’s also okay to admit that you’re anxious about some of the changes.
Opening up the lines of communication helps to provide a safe space for both of you to feel comfortable. You can choose to be an active listener for your partner so you can better understand their needs, while using “I” statements to avoid the blame game and express yourself honestly.
Dive Into Shared Experiences
Now is a great time to try something new together. Take a dance class, engage in new hobbies, or reignite your spark by taking part in some of the things you used to enjoy together. Rekindling the connection you felt in the beginning of your relationship can go a long way.
The beautiful thing, though, is that you can use the connection you’ve built over the years to become even stronger. Don’t be afraid to take things a step further with your new experiences. Consider planning a trip together or prioritizing physical intimacy that doesn’t directly involve sex. You might be surprised by how close you’ll start to feel when you focus on reconnecting and finding yourselves in this new stage of life.
Focus On Personal Growth
Going through midlife transitions can create identity shifts. Maybe you’ve given the last 18 years to raising your child, and now you’re not sure what’s ahead. Maybe a new job has you questioning what you really want for your future.
Whatever the case, it’s important to prioritize self-care and personal growth at this stage of life. You can’t pour from an empty cup, and you can’t be a good partner if you aren’t taking care of your well-being.
So, make self-care a part of your daily routine. Stay physically active, get enough sleep, and take care of your mental health through journaling, mindfulness, or meditation. Engage in personal pursuits and hobbies, and encourage your partner to do the same. You can build each other up and be there as one another’s support system as you navigate these new waters.
Need More Support?
If you find that you’re struggling to find your footing as a couple on this journey, don’t feel as though you have to navigate it alone. Going to couples counseling together can help you feel closer than ever as you adjust to new challenges and routines.
Counseling can help you learn more about yourself and your needs and wants, while teaching you to be a more active listener. It can help you boost communication in your relationship, set healthy boundaries, and decide together what the next chapter of your life will look like.
