Communication is a powerful tool. It’s the cornerstone of a healthy relationship. Without strong communication, your relationship is likely to lack trust and intimacy. You’ll make assumptions and deal with misunderstandings more often than not. More importantly, you won’t be able to experience the deep connection with your partner that both of you deserve.

But, as the old saying goes, communication is a two-way street.

It’s about more than just speaking and opening up. While that part is certainly important and not always an easy challenge to master, being an active listener is just as essential.

Keep in mind that there’s a big difference between hearing your partner and actively listening. Let’s take a closer look at what active listening is, why it’s so important, and how it can foster open dialogue in relationships.

What Is Active Listening?

Active listening is actually a communication skill — some people are able to do it more naturally, while it takes work for others. In any case, it requires giving your full attention to someone while they’re speaking so you not only hear what they’re saying, but you develop a better understanding of it.

There’s no denying we live in a fast-paced, stressful world. How often do you and your partner have conversations where one of you is distracted by your phone or a television show? Maybe your partner is trying to tell you something and you’re getting work done on your laptop. Or, maybe you just tend to “tune out” and not give them the attention they deserve.

Again, there’s a difference between hearing and listening.

Tips for Active Listening

If you’re not sure how to be an active listener, it can take some practice. But, once you realize the rewards it can bring to your relationship, you’ll likely be more eager to engage in active listening through every conversation.

Focus solely on your partner as they’re speaking. Maintain eye contact and don’t let your mind wander. Ask questions to learn more about what they’re saying. Use body language to let them know you’re invested in the conversation. Paraphrase things they’re saying to you and repeat them back to show you have an understanding.

These simple tips can go a long way in not only letting your partner know you’re listening, but also in helping you truly understand their point of view.

Why Is Active Listening Important?

Active listening can be beneficial to every relationship, not just romantic ones. It builds trust and understanding, helps you look at different perspectives to boost empathy, and makes it easier to resolve conflicts in a healthy way.

Additionally, you’ll get the most out of every conversation when you choose to be an active listener. It will create a positive environment that helps everyone feel heard, understood, and respected. Imagine how much more productive your conversations with friends, family members, co-workers, and romantic partners would be if everyone chose to truly listen and develop a deeper understanding.

Open Dialogue

Active listening encourages open dialogue in relationships. Since it builds trust, it can become easier over time for both parties to show more vulnerability. In romantic relationships, especially, that helps to improve intimacy and can foster a closer bond between you and your partner. Open dialogue means being able to discuss things freely, without having to worry about judgment or criticism, and active listening is a large component of that.

Because active listening is a skill, it’s something that can take time to build. If you understand the importance but you’re struggling to be an active listener, don’t let frustration hold you back.
